Paintings

Two paintings I did a few weeks ago.
Self-portrait. Acrylic on sketch book cover.
I began by painting the background, I used a roller to apply layers of colour, this created an interesting texture, the sketch book cover also had a texture, that looked really good under paint. I also squirted some paint directly from the the tube on to the canvas, which made a really great splatter effect, I also flicked lumps paint at the canvas. I painted the portrait over it. I like the effect the paint lumps have on the portrait, adding another layer of texture.

Acrylic on mount board.
The background is layers of rollered on paint and hand prints. The portrait is a mixture of  unusual colours.

Photography Experiments

Over painting, I used masking tape so I would get clean lines, I like how you can see through the paint.

The over painting was supposed to look like a bar code, but the lines aren't clean enough and I don't think the thickness and spacing of the lines is right.

I spread the paint out from the lips with my fingertips, I really like this effect. The eyes are one of the most important features of the face, painting them black makes the subject look demonic, because the eyes tell you so much about a person.

Same technique as before, smudging the paint with the fingertips, even further than before, I really like this image.

Paint smudged with the fingertips, the lips look quite jokerish, I like this idea too

I think the drips are to straight down I think there needs to be more movement in them.
I like how the smear across the eyes tales of on two different directions, I also like the addition of the drips.

Fingerprints on eyes and lips, I like the contrast of the black and white photo and the red paint.

Roller used to apply paint, I like the composition and colour of this image.

Inspired by the work of David Hockney and Oliver Chanarin and Adam Broomberg.

This is the rest if the image that I cut the circles from above.

David Hockney style image. I cut up an A4 size photo and put the face back together I like this technique.

I was going to cut up this photo to make a photo collage, but decided it looked quite good as the slightly separated sections, I add the colour because it makes everything stand out  a lot  more.

Another photo collage, I like the way it has turned out.

I cut out two similar photos, one in black and one in colour, and reassembled the face using parts of both images, I like the combination of black and white and coloured images.

I like this collage as you can really put the leaf parts back together anyway you want.

Cut out the leaf shapes at the bottom so there wasn't a straight edge, and cut out other central leaves and stuck them at the bottom. I like this idea.

Another photo collage of the full figure this time, I don't think it really works as well as the others.

This is the first image I did with the masking tape, I applied the paint with a roller so I would get the texture.  The masking tape got to wet from the paint or I pulled it off to soon and it lifted the surface of the paper. I do like the colour and texture of the paint with the photo and I also like the small areas where the top layes of paper has come of but, to much has come of on the left side.

Photography From Yesterday

Yesterday was a horrible rainy day, but I decided to go outside and take some photos. Even just around college there is so much that is visually interesting especially at this time of year, when all the leaves change colour, all the colours seemed so lovely and bright. Here are some of the photos I took.

If always loved the rainbow affect of oil/petrol spill.

I love all these yellow leaves.

this is a really gross photo but I like the combination of disgusting dirt and rubbish with the bight colour.

I think this needs more shade.

I cant seem to get darker shadow on this photo, which I think would look better

I wasn't sure if I should crop this photo or not, but I think it looks good as it is.

I didn't realise you can see the spiders until I saw the photo on the computer, it looks really creepy.

New Paintings

spray paint, acrylic paint and charcoal on wooden board.
This piece of work is inspired by an other piece I did for my specialist techniques last year. It was originally going to be a copy of the previous work using different media but as I created it, it changed or my idea changed. I painted the face first then I sprayed the spray paint around it, close to the canvas so it would run. I then then flicked acrylic paint on top. I began to add charcoal around the face but not all the paint was dry so some of the spray paint peeled of. I added more definition with charcoal when it was dry. I think the finished painting looks a bit street arty, and I really like the definition added by the charcoal.

Self portrait.
acrylic paint, ink and spray paint on sketch book cover.
I didn't really have any thing else thick enough to paint on so I took the cover off an old sketch book. I put quite a few layers of paint on before I painted then face, I was trying to billed up a good background but it ended up being all covered. I painted some of the face using a small sponge which worked quite well. I do feel that the face could be a lot better and I will need to work on it.

The Haining

On Wednesday I went on a trip to the Haining in Selkirk with the rest of my course group. The old house and its contents as well as the grounds was very interesting and had a slightly spooky feel. Here are some photos I took while I was there.
